Commercially, people categorize travertine as marble. Travertine is a chemically sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate minerals. Travertine is a particularly attractive form of limestone. Its fibrous, marble-like texture and attractive earthy color palette make it one of the most popular stones for building materials. Human use of travertine dates back a long time; historically, most of the travertine used for architecture and artwork came from the mountains of Italy, and the building that best represents Roman culture, the Colosseum, is a famous structure made of travertine. In addition to the Colosseum, travertine also adorns the exterior of the Teatro Marcello, the frame of the Pantheon, the columns of St. Peter's Basilica, and the architectural structures of the Basilica of Santa Maria and the Basilica of San Giovanni in the Lateran. The combination of travertine and water is well represented in the work of the Trevi Fountain, the largest fountain in Rome and another symbol of the Eternal City, which is full of baroque splendor and grandeur.

Travertine comes in a variety of colors, including green, white, purple, pink, and coffee, in addition to yellow. Travertine is also found and produced in Henan, China. The hue of travertine is mostly beige, which in turn makes people feel mild, rich in texture and clear stripes, prompting the decorated buildings to often have a strong cultural and historical flavor, and is used in many buildings around the world. I.M. Pei Architects designed the interior and exterior of the Bank of China Building at the Xidan intersection in Beijing, and chose Italian Roman travertine, with a total of 20,000 square meters.

Travertine is widely used because of its several advantages.
